Can you still find pre 1965 silver coins in bank rolls?

My son has been coin collecting for about 6 months and goes through about $100 dollars a week in dimes from the bank, but has never found anything pre 1965. Has anybody else had any luck doing this? Any tips for ways to find pre-1965 silver coins without just buying them from shops.

Silver dimes and quarters are getting harder to find in rolls due to both denominations circulate. That means they get out into the public and a lot of people who are not really collectors take them for the silver content. It seems that 1/2 dollar rolls are a better bet for 40% silver 1/2’s 1965-1970 as well as some 90% halves 1964 and before. 1/2 dollar rolls are usually too expensive for the younger collectors. Unless one really knows there coins, ebay is a place to stay away from for a lot of reasons. Roosevelt dimes are still not very expensive and it would not hurt to put a nice set of the silver ones together, but you will have to get them from a coin dealer. Also put a clad set together for some of them are getting scarce that can be done from change or rolls from the bank. Try to find dimes with nice strikes especially the torch on the reverse. Above all have fun.

Attention numismatists and investors: Does tarnish negatively affect the value of silver coins?

I bought silver coins recently and some of the plastic slips they came in are not air tight. I am afraid that they may tarnish over time and their value will be affected negatively. Currently they are in nearly perfect uncirculated condition.

If the value of the coins would be harmed from tarnish I would like to preserve them with some type of casing or other product that would protect them. Thanks in advance!

When you purchase coins, most of the time the package you receive them in is not meant for long term storage, it is the most convenient/cheapest way for the dealer. Absolutely move them to a better environment, preferably PVC free.

While toning and patina CAN add value to a coin, it is pretty rare that it does. Most collectors like their coins as bright as possible, (without being cleaned), and will pay a premium for that. Most toning and patina that adds value to a coin is for ancient coins, which have all been cleaned, and an attractive hard green patina will add value to.

I want to buy gold coins. And Silver coins.

I need to save my money by investing in these raw materials. I need to buy maple leafs, krugerranders or kookaburra coins. Please guide me to the best sellers? I didnt find alot of trustworthy ones on the internet. But I need my gold!

I’ve used California Numismatic Investments. Found them to be totally reliable with good prices. Here is the website:

There is also a gold exchange traded fund you can purchase if you have a stock brokerage account. It is offered by Ishares, and the ticker is GLD. The silver exchange traded fund ticker is SLV. So, there are a lot of ways to invest in the metals, without trading futures contracts!

How do I get my silver coins appraised?

I have a bunch of silver coins, I don’t think any of them are worth a whole lot because they are circulated not "mint" and I really don’t know much about coins… so how do I find an honest appraiser and how much do they generally charge? I wouldn’t want to get them appraised for more than they’re worth of course.

Actually most coin dealers are honest but need to make a profit. The bigger the dealer the less you get for he has more overhead. Most dealers when they are not busy will go through your coins for you and tell you what they would pay. There is no rule that you can not go to a second dealer and get his opinion too. See if you can find a Coins or Coinage magazine, inside they have a retail price guide. The prices are usually higher than dealers sell the coins for and of course you would get less from a dealer. the idea here is at least you will get an idea if your coins are scarce or not. If it sells for a dollar then you know it is not worth much but if the price is $50 in say grade fine then you know the coin has value. Also see if a coin club is in your area they can help in pricing and grading the coins.

I would try the Silver and Gold Exchange. They are one of those mail-in buyers of gold and silver, but they will sell silver and gold bullion, coins, etc. They do not advertise this fact, I guess because the demand would probably outstrip supply if they did. I know they sell below retail because I buy from them from time to time. I have never found a better price anywhere else. Can coins containing silver be found in federal wrapped rolls?

I am a coin roll hunter at my local banks and I had read somewhere that silver will throw off the weight and will be back ordered to the mint. Is this true meaning that the only way to find silver coins is to look through rolls people have brought in? Thanks!

First of all the only rolls the mint makes are ones sold at a profit. They are usually in special wrappers. Coins are sent now in large boxes (no more cloth bags) to the 12 Federal Reserve banks and they either wrap them, or farm out the job to a company. These are all new coins, old coins never are returned to the mint, in the past, 1800’s, they were but not since then. The mint does store coins and may keep them until the Federal Reserve needs them, they are in boxes. I am not so sure about coins from coin star and the like, they may weigh them to make extra money from the silver that people put into their counting machines. The best finds are in home type wrappers that people bring in. It is not impossible to find a mix roll of say buffalo nickels that got sent to the bank by mistake or the person did not know their value. As A coin collector advise family of values of coins you have to stop them from spending them. In the weekly coin magazine Coin World there is a monthly column called "found in rolls" and he has good advice.
